To honor service members, who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, The Women In Military Memorial in Washington, D.C. asked over 200 American Artists to paint more than 1,100 portraits for an exhibit. Robert M. Henry painted these four portraits, donated them to the exhibit, and afterwards to the loved ones of these fallen heros. To view the online gallery, go to www.facesofthefallen.org |

"I am still unable to get the images, snips of conversations, and sounds from the closing ceremonies of the Faces of the Fallen out of my mind’s eye. But like all sweet and bitter memories, these will eventually fade into my most blessed recesses and may come forward whenever I need to look back on my life’s achievements and remind myself of a job “well done”. |

"I personally didn't feel that a 6" x 8" portrait did justice to the memory of so fine a young man. I decided to give his mother a much larger portrait and presented it to her privately after the ceremony." |

If you want to view a small portion of one of the interviews which was broadcast, which includes both Mrs. Peterson and I, feel free to view http://video.nbc4.com/player/?id=117052. The ceremony was very formal and touched me in ways I am not willing to describe. But I honestly believe that I now know what “closure” after a death means. It is a total release of pain filled with an immeasurable amount of love. That the departed now firmly resides within one’s heart as a treasure not a source of conflict is the best I can say. I played a very small part in this process when each of those who’s son, daughter, husband, wife, or loved one experienced “closure”. This experience will continue to be my fondest memory, for the rest of my life. That such a small, fragile piece of my art, which had such a minor yet perhaps an important role in this event, will always be a comfort for me when I am faced with my own personal tragedies." - Robert M.
